Surgical Services

Surgery at Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical CenterHaving surgery can be frightening, both for the individual who will be undergoing surgery as well as his/her family members. Our surgical services department is committed to helping make this experience less stressful for you and your family. The personalized care and attention we provide to our patients and families offer a comforting atmosphere that will help to alleviate any fears you or your loved one may have.

We have high standards for the quality of care we provide, and hope this is evident in the services we offer to you and your family. You can trust your care to our surgical teams, which include board-certified surgeons and anesthesiologists and other specialty physicians who use our operating rooms. These physicians are supported by highly-skilled nurses and technicians who are devoted to ensuring a positive surgical experience for you and your family.

We perform both inpatient and outpatient surgery as well as laser surgery in our modern operating rooms, which are equipped with the latest technology and equipment. Besides six major operating rooms, our surgery department also features three endoscopy rooms and a cystoscopy room, along with a Pain Management Center. Our surgical services department performs an average of 1000 procedures each month, including many types of surgery except neurosurgery and thoracic surgery. We also have a board-certified spine surgeon on the medical staff.

You will receive a phone call from a preoperative nurse, who will obtain your medical history and provide information pertaining to your scheduled procedures. All patients scheduled for a total joint replacement will be scheduled to attend a preoperative class, which will coordinate the care you receive from the many skilled professionals involved in your hospital stay. Through this class, you will also receive valuable information and education to hasten your return to your normal activities of daily living.

When you arrive for surgery, we ask that you sign in with an attendant in our registration area. From there, you will be directed to the surgical waiting room. The surgical waiting room has refreshments, a television and reading material. After checking in, you will be taken to our nine-bed pre-operative holding room, where you will stay until time for your surgery. A family member will be allowed to stay with you during this time. During surgery, a volunteer is available in the surgery waiting room to communicate information from the surgery team to your family as well as to assist you and family members as needed.

After your surgery, you will recover in one of two separate recovery rooms, where a specially-trained team of nurses provides care during your postoperative period. Together, our recovery units offer 17 total beds with placement determined by your needs for recuperating.
