Monitored Exercise Program
If you have heart disease or chronic lung
disease, your physician has likely discussed with you
the importance of exercise and a proper diet for managing
your illness. We can help you achieve your goals for
a healthier lifestyle through our outpatient monitored
exercise program, available at McDowell Wellness Center.
We offer monitored exercise programs to individuals
who have had chest pain, PTLA/stent placement, heart
attack, open heart surgery or a heart transplant. Monitored
exercise programming is also offered to individuals
with chronic lung disease such as emphysema, asthma,
bronchitis, COPD or pulmonary fibrosis.
We accept patients upon physician referral and will
keep your physician informed about your progress throughout
your participation in the program. When you begin our
program, we will develop an individualized exercise
program along with helping you set goals for making
healthy lifestyle changes. Most of our participants
generally stay in the program for 10 to 12 weeks.
Participants exercise three days a week. We have exercise
bicycles, treadmills, rowers, arm ergometers, recumbent
steppers and weights. During exercise, you will be telemetry
monitored along with frequent checks of your blood pressure,
heart rate and oxygen saturation levels.
While you are in our monitored exercise program, you
will be attending a series of educational classes to
support your efforts toward developing a healthy lifestyle.
These educational classes include information on diet,
risk factors, energy conservation, medication and stress-lowering
techniques. Our goal is to restore you to a healthy
lifestyle with as much independence as is possible for
your health status.
