Cancer Care Center
Individuals
with cancer may find themselves needing to be hospitalized
more than once during their course of treatment. Ephraim
McDowell Regional Medical Center is making those hospital
stays a little more comfortable with a Cancer Care
Center, located on the third floor.
The Cancer Care Center features 12 patient rooms,
all of them private, as well as a family resource room
for use by patients’ family members. The
patient rooms are individually designed with the patient’s
comfort in mind and look very similar to what one would
have at home instead of the typical hospital setting. The
walls are papered in warm colors. The rooms also include a wide sleeper
chair and another upholstered chair positioned below
an adjustable reading light.
The family resource room includes a large television,
a leather couch and two chairs that become sleeper
beds. The room also holds an activity table and
chairs and includes a kitchen area and bath facilities. Printed
cancer information and a computer for Internet access
to additional cancer information are also available
in the family resource room.
Centralizing cancer care allows physicians to have
more time to spend with their patients and their family
members. In addition, the nursing staff is trained
in the specialty of cancer care, and cancer patients
see a consistent staff during their different admissions.
The Cancer Care Center is the creation of the Central
Kentucky Cancer Program (CKCP) in partnership with
the Ephraim McDowell Health Care Foundation. |
