Congratulations on becoming an Associate
of Ephraim McDowell Health! Our comprehensive
orientation program is the beginning to a successful
nursing career for you at Ephraim McDowell Regional
Medical Center. The orientation process is designed
to teach you about your job responsibilities. Our goal
is to give you information and tools to help you transition
into your role of caring for your patients.
If you are a recent nursing graduate or
a nurse without recent hospital experience, you
may participate in an intensive 12-week minimum orientation,
which is generally offered in January and June.
Clinical orientation starts on the second Monday
of each month. Classes for RNs and LPNs are held
from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday
the first week and Monday the second
week.
Following the classroom, you will spend at least eight weeks with
your preceptor, whose primary responsibility will be devoted to your
orientation. Patient assignments will be taken during this period
with a gradual increase in responsibility. One day per month for five months will be spent in a classroom. During these sessions, body systems and
appropriate nursing interventions will be discussed by a qualified
nurse educator. Twice weekly clinical conferences will be held throughout
the orientation phase. Problem-based learning has been proven to
enhance the education process and lead to a more qualified, satisfied
nurse. This also produces higher quality patient care.
If you are an experienced nurse, your orientation process
will be similar to the process described above. The first week and
one day of employment will be spent in a classroom setting, where
you will become familiar with our products, procedures and policies.
Your classroom experience will be a combination of lecture, discussion,
learning lab and self-study modules.
Following the classroom, you will gain clinical experience with your
preceptor, whose primary responsibility will be devoted to your orientation.
During this period, patient assignments will be taken with a gradual
increase in responsibility. The length of time you stay in this phase
of orientation is based on your individual needs. We are willing
to individualize the orientation process to your specific needs and
schedule.
If you are a Certified Nursing Assistant, orientation for PCTs is a four-day process,
with classes held from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Monday,
Tuesday and Wednesday.
The first week of employment is spent in
a classroom setting familiarizing you with our
products, procedures and policies. The classroom
is a combination of lecture, discussion, learning
lab and self-study modules. |
