Our
central in-patient pharmacy is available 24 hours daily
to fill and refill prescriptions. We also supply outpatient
clinical departments such as the Emergency Department,
Cardiac Cath Lab, Operating Room and Recovery Rooms
with ordered medications and stock medications. Clinical
pharmacists are available on the patient care units
to provide clinical pharmacy services to our inpatients.
Our central pharmacy staff offers 24-hour
support for Fort Logan Hospital patients and
also provides pharmacy services to Ephraim
McDowell Health's family medical centers. Our
on-site outpatient pharmacy is open five days
a week to provide prescriptions to our discharged
patients and Associates. Wellness FIRST Pharmacy,
located within McDowell Wellness Center, offers
full retail pharmacy services to the community
at large. Our pharmacists provide Medication
Therapy Management services by appointment
in our MTM Clinic at Ephraim McDowell Regional
Medical Center or at the Wellness FIRST Pharmacy.
Patient populations: We offer
services to all patients treated within our
Medical Center, including discharge prescriptions.
Some indigent care prescriptions are processed
via our outpatient pharmacy and paid for by
the Ephraim McDowell Health Care Foundation.
Ephraim McDowell Health Associates are serviced
by our outpatient pharmacy.
Volume: The inpatient pharmacy
dispenses more than 1.5 million doses per year
to inpatients. Our outpatient pharmacy fills
about 90 prescriptions per day.
Services/treatments offered: Clinical
pharmacists provide clinical consults for kinetic
dosing and monitoring of drugs, pain management
dosing and consults, hyperalimentation consults,
and culture & and sensitivity reviews for
monitoring antibiotic therapy. Pharmacists
provide screening for drug-drug interactions,
drug-nutrient interactions and allergy or adverse
event potential and also perform drug regimen
reviews and participate in providing drug information
to healthcare professionals or patients and
caregivers. Pharmacists provide face-to-face
consults with patients via our Medication Therapy
Management Clinic.
Work environment: We have a
fast-paced work environment. We serve a variety
of customer types: patients, physicians, caregivers
and healthcare professionals. Prescription
information is transmitted electronically from
the patient care areas and is processed in
the hospital-wide computer system. Computer
skills, pharmaceutical calculations and close
attention to detail is are critical.
Skill mix: A registered pharmacist
is available on-site 24 hours every day. Pharmacists
have obtained either a Pharm.D. or B.S. Pharmacy
degree and have satisfied Kentucky Board of
Pharmacy licensure requirements. Certified
technicians have completed a national certification
exam. Entry level pharmacy technicians are
trained to perform specific job tasks and are
supervised directly by a licensed pharmacist.
Other information about the pharmacy: Ephraim
McDowell Regional Medical Center pharmacists
serve as Voluntary Pharmacy Community Based
Faculty and precept Pharm.D. candidates from
regional Colleges of Pharmacy, including about
20 per year from the University of Kentucky.
The Pharmacy Department participates in Ephraim
McDowell's Annual Health Care Careers Camp,
Middle School Career Days and University Level
tours and Career Days to promote the profession
of pharmacy as a career option for today's
youth.
